Vadim Veste was released from a Moldovan prison after serving three years for raping a 14-year-old girl. Eighteen days later, the dual Moldovan-Romanian national entered Ireland. Within eleven months he attacked a woman walking her dog, dragged her into an unlit part of a Fermoy park, gagged and pinned her, and committed aggravated sexual assault.

The record before Ireland

Irish court reporting records that Veste was convicted in Moldova in 2016 of raping a minor and served a three-year sentence. He was released on 11 December 2020 and travelled to Ireland on 29 December to stay with his mother. Interpol liaison also established convictions for burglary and possessing drugs for personal use.

The Fermoy attack

On 7 November 2021, Veste came from behind a woman walking her dog in a dark section of St Colman’s Park. He covered her mouth, dragged her down, punched her, forced a woolly hat into her mouth and pinned her shoulders and arms with his knees before sexually assaulting her. She believed she would be raped or killed. She freed an arm, scratched and bit him, and screamed. Two men exercising nearby approached and the attack ended.

Gardaí identified Veste through CCTV and DNA recovered from beneath the victim’s fingernails and from the hat. He initially claimed a dispute about her dog, then accepted her account. He pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault. Mr Justice Paul McDermott selected a nine-year headline and imposed six years, noting the random, predatory attack and his serious sexual-offending history.

Removal after imprisonment

Crime World identified Veste as one of 23 Romanian citizens removed on the 13 October 2025 charter flight. The Department of Justice confirmed that all 23 men had custodial sentences, were removed on criminality grounds under the EU Free Movement Directive, and received re-entry bans of up to ten years. The Department did not publish individual names or each person’s exclusion period.
