Gintaras Jankevicius: hours of rape, threats and false imprisonment

The Lithuanian national confined a woman, repeatedly raped and sexually assaulted her, threatened to keep her until she became pregnant and handed her a knife while demanding that she kill herself. The 12-year term was ordered consecutive to an existing drugs sentence.

Gintaras Jankevicius came to Ireland from Lithuania in 2016. His Irish record now includes a drugs sentence and an 11-year active term for a sustained sexual attack in which a woman was raped, degraded and prevented from leaving over several hours.

A prolonged attack

Jankevicius pleaded guilty to rape, sexual assault and false imprisonment. The sentencing court heard that he confined the woman and repeatedly attacked her during an ordeal lasting several hours. He threatened to keep her until she became pregnant and at one stage gave her a knife while telling her to kill herself.

The victim eventually escaped. In her impact statement she described enduring psychological damage and the destruction of her sense of safety. The court was told that Jankevicius had limited empathy and was assessed as posing a high risk of sexual reoffending.

The sentence runs after an existing term

The court set a headline sentence of 12 years and suspended the final year, leaving 11 years active. It also ordered five years of post-release supervision. Crucially, the term is consecutive to a three-year sentence Jankevicius was already serving for drugs offences; it did not simply run at the same time.

Published sentencing reports also recorded previous convictions in the Czech Republic for robbery and in the United Kingdom for criminal damage and a drugs offence. Those are prior foreign convictions, not additional Irish convictions arising from this case.

Jankevicius is identified in court reporting as a Lithuanian national who came to Ireland in 2016. No reviewed source identifies him as an asylum seeker, illegal entrant or person subject to deportation, so this report makes none of those claims.
