Three men watched a refrigerated container in Cork for days, waiting to retrieve 60 kilograms of cocaine hidden behind its panelling. Gardaí were watching them. Gentjan and Donatel Dodaj and Daniel Afedoaei pleaded guilty and each received an effective eight-year prison term.
The operation
Garda intelligence identified a refrigerated container at Ringaskiddy containing 60 one-kilogram packages concealed behind panelling. Detectives surveilled the men after they travelled from Athlone. Shortly after 2am on 5 August 2023, the crew entered a haulier’s yard wearing ski masks and carrying tools, opened the compartment and removed the cocaine.
They left in a van and car travelling in convoy. Gardaí intercepted them at Dunkettle. CCTV recorded the operation and the defendants identified themselves in the footage. Judge Jonathan Dunphy found that they occupied trusted positions in the distribution of a very large quantity of drugs.
Who was convicted
- Gentjan Dodaj, an Albanian national resident in Ireland since 2006, had no previous convictions. He received nine years with the final year suspended.
- Donatel Dodaj, his Albanian brother, had reportedly arrived only weeks before the offence and had no previous convictions. He received the same effective eight years.
- Daniel Afedoaei, a Romanian national living in Athlone, committed the crime while on bail over €160,000 in laundered cash. He received nine and a half years with the final 18 months suspended, consecutive to the earlier effective three-year money-laundering term.
The defendants did not identify who commissioned the retrieval. The street-level crew went to prison; the controllers behind the shipment were not identified in the published proceedings.

Afedoaei’s additional effective three-year laundering term adds a benchmark of €297,216, producing combined gross exposure of approximately €2,674,944.
The border, bail and removal questions
The sources establish nationality, not illegal presence. They say Gentjan lived here since 2006, Donatel arrived only weeks before the offence and Afedoaei was a Romanian resident. None establishes that any man was unlawfully present.
