Benedick Joel became so trusted by a Galway family that its children called him “Uncle Ben”. He used that access to sexually abuse two young sisters between 2017 and 2018. A jury convicted him of 24 sexual assaults and one attempted anal rape.
Trust used as access
Joel, originally from Nigeria, had lived in Ireland for 22 years and worked for roughly 20 years as a security guard in Galway city. He had no previous convictions or earlier Garda record.
He became a close family friend and emotionally manipulated the two girls. The abuse included supposed body or development checks, inappropriate touching and sexual assaults in the family home, his apartment and his car.
The older sister was first abused when she was eleven. The attempted anal rape occurred years later while she was dozing on a couch and repeatedly told him not to proceed. The younger sister disclosed abuse in January 2022, after which her older sister reported that Joel had abused her too.
Verdicts and sentence
Joel denied wrongdoing and continued to reject the jury’s verdicts. Following a Central Criminal Court trial in February 2026, he was convicted of 24 counts of sexual assault and one of attempted anal rape arising from the 2017 and 2018 abuse.
On 27 April 2026, Judge Kerida Naidoo said the offences involved serious degradation, emotional manipulation and a grave breach of trust. Consecutive terms reflected that there were two victims. The global sentence was 15½ years with the final 18 months suspended, leaving fourteen years’ immediate custody.
